How to File an Auto Insurance Claim: Steps to Take After an Accident

How to File an Auto Insurance Claim: Steps to Take After an Accident

Accidents happen. When they do, knowing how to file a claim after an accident can help make the process smoother and less stressful.

Filing a claim is important as it allows your insurance company to help protect you by doing a thorough investigation. You may also miss out on compensation that can help cover your losses if you don’t file your claim.

Steps to take after an accident

  1. First and most importantly, make sure everyone is safe.

Once everyone is in a secure location, contact the authorities to report the accident. Let them know if anyone needs medical assistance.

  2. Then, document the scene by taking clear photos on your phone, including car damage. Make sure you take a photo of the other vehicle’s license plates, their damage, and your surroundings.

  3. Next, exchange information with the other driver. Be sure to get their name, number, insurance details, the car’s make and model, and the name and contact information of any passengers. If possible, try to get information from any witnesses.

  4. Now it's time to contact your insurance company. Reach out right away after the accident as your company will help you through the whole process.

You can start the claims process online right from your phone 24/7 through the Kemper Claims portal.

How to file an auto claim

  1. First, file your claim. A claims adjuster will be assigned to you.

  2. The claims adjuster assigned to your claim will contact you usually by the next business day to get the process started. Your adjuster will review what coverages are available as well as provide you with an explanation of the claim process.

With your permission, they will send you a text to opt into two-way texting to make communication easier.

  3. Your adjuster will let you know what kind of inspection you need.

You may be able to submit photos for minor damage. If your vehicle is safe to drive, you may want to have your vehicle inspected at one of our drive-in locations. Appointments are often available same day. For more severe damage, an appraiser may be assigned to review your damage.

  4. Your claims appraiser will provide an estimate and answer questions you may have about the repair process. For your convenience, we offer repair services through our trusted Kemper Repair Network, or you may schedule your own repair service.

  5. Payment is made directly to you and/or the repair shop managing your repairs.

Filing a claim doesn’t have to be stressful. Just gather the right information and follow these simple steps. You’ll be on the road in no time!
